Hello lovely people of the world!
My name is Khadija (pronounced Kah-Dee-Jah). I suppose the first thing you should know about me is that I am a nerd. I am pre-med with a major in microbiology and minor in psychology. If that doesn't already tell you, I'll say it out loud: I love science! It is absolutely fascinating. What I don't like are all the tests that I have to take while trying to learn, but hey, that's just how schools work so nothing I can do to change that.
My "nerdiness" continues on with my love for books. I don't know if reading qualifies as a hobby but it is definitely one of mine. My current obsession is the series of books by George R. R. Martin called "Game of Thrones." Unless you live under a rock, you most likely have at the least heard of these books. Or you've probably watched the show (the books are better).
Besides that, however, I'm completely an adventure kind-of girl. Anything with a thrill to it—bunjee jumping, sky diving, horseback riding, snowboarding (though I completely suck at this), parasailing—I am ready to do. I have yet to go parasailing and sky diving, but they are definitely the next two things I'll be scratching off my bucket list.
I like to be spontaneous, and so I'm just going to spontaneously cut this short right here because I'm sure you don't want me to keep listing off things about myself as if this is a dating site. So with that, my lovelies, adieu!

Game of Thrones.
Most favorite character: Littlefinger

Hi Khadija, I would also consider myself to be a major nerd. My major is Health & Exercise Science and I can’t help but think about muscle movements and biomechanics when I watch television/sporting events! Also, I have taken Introductory Microbiology with Dr. Collamore; have you had the pleasure of being in one of her classes? I absolutely loved it.
ReplyDeleteI actually did have Microbiology with Dr. Collamore, but she was pregnant at the time and so left about a third of the semester in after which Dr. Nagle started teaching the rest of the course. Both professors were great even though their teaching styles were very different. More than the class, I loved the lab. My TA was one of the best TAs I've ever had in all my years.
DeleteKhadija,
ReplyDeleteI envy you for being able to enjoy science classes. I always wanted to find them interesting but they just bored me to death. From my pre-med friends I can tell that you science majors put in a lot of time and I think any science falls into the hardest major at OU categories. As for being adventurous I am the same way, however, skydiving is one thing I can honestly say I do not think i will ever try. Something about jumping out of a plane just isn't appealing to me although I have heard it is an amazing experience. Good luck completing the rest of your adventures!
SO TRUE about Game of Thrones books, Khadija! I enjoy watching the TV show too, but I cannot figure out how the show even makes sense to people if they have not read the books! There's a friend of mine who watches the show but who has not read the books, and I'll ask him questions like, "Why did Littlefinger do (whatever)?" and of course he has no idea - he just goes with the flow and doesn't really worry about why anybody does anything, ha ha. So, I cannot promise you much science in this class, but books, yes yes yes, books, stories, lots of adventures. The Mahabharata, even more than Ramayana, really is a kind of Game of Thrones epic struggle. I hope you will enjoy it!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is awesome you enjoy your classes so much! It is much more common—in my experience at least—to meet science majors who are in it more for the possibility of making good money post-grad, but it’s great if you can actually enjoy the road there as well! I definitely chose my rather impractical—religious studies—major for enjoyment as opposed to career stability, haha.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, Hello Khadija!
ReplyDeleteThe end of your introduction was funny! I hate to say it, but I have never heard of the books "Game of Thrones" Just the TV show that I refuse to watch. Good thing you like all the science classes that you have to take. It seems very challenging, but it will all pay off in the end. Have you ever been base-jumping? It is probably the most scary thing I can think of that I'm sure you would love to scratch off your bucket list.
Hi Khadija! I am such a big an of Game of Thrones as well!! I started reading the books long before the show even came out, so getting the opportunity to watch what I've read has been so great. I am also pre-med and I wish you all the luck in applying for medical school. You seem very passionate about what you're learning which will make the process even better for you. I love how you are so into adventure. I feel like many people take that for granted and don't fully enjoy life by taking some risk. I find is amazing that you made a bucket list to ensure some thrill in your life!
ReplyDeleteKhadija,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that the Game of Thrones books are better than the shows. The characters are much more complex than you see in the show. That being said, I love both. The Littlefinger quote was a great ending to your introduction. It's great that you love science so much. I wish I enjoyed sciences and math more than I do. I have taken a few psychology/sociology classes that I really enjoyed, although those are much softer/social sciences than microbiology! Good luck with the rest of your semester!
Khadija,
ReplyDeleteI love science too! We can be nerds together (I take pride in admitting my nerdy side too)!
I won’t get too deep into it, but I also hate how the American school system places so much emphasis on test taking instead of purely learning. I haven’t done enough research on benefits versus disadvantages of the European school systems, but from what I know some sound decent in the sense that the students aren’t so pressured to learn via standardized testing.
Man, we sound similar. I love books and am an adrenaline junkie. Go us!
Happy semester wishes and hope to chat some more on each other’s blogs.
Hi Khadija!
ReplyDeleteI am pre-pharmacy, so I am definitely a science nerd like you! I gladly admit that I am a nerd. I feel like a dork when I try to describe to people why I love science and why I chose to pursue pharmacy as my career! Unlike you, I am not adventurous at all! Everything you were talking about scares me to death! I wish I could be more adventurous like that! Good luck with your semester!
Hi Khadija! I’m also a Microbiology/Pre-Med major! It’s really great that you enjoy all your classes because it seems like you’ve found a career path that you’ll really love! The Game of Thrones show is one of my favorites and I’ve wanted to start reading the books, but I just haven’t had the time to crack a book open besides my textbooks for class…I definitely want to go skydiving soon. Hopefully this summer when I turn 21, I’ll go!
ReplyDeleteHey Khadija!
ReplyDeleteIt is so awesome to find someone who loves science just as much as I do, and even cooler that we have the same major! I love reading, but I haven't gotten around to reading the "Game of Thrones" series unfortunately (I've heard from so many people that their wonderful). We are really getting into the semester at this point, good luck with your studies!
Hello Khadija! I am also Pre-Med and have taken some microbiology courses. I am a psychology major also so we seem to have very similar interests like science and also Game of Thrones!! I am counting down the days until the next season is released. I really would like to go skydiving also and just an fyi parasailing is overrated!! I will say the view is beautiful especially when you can see all the hotels along the coast. Anyways, best of luck applying to medical school!
ReplyDeleteHi, Khadija! It's a good thing that you like science, majoring in microbiology. I think it's great when I meet people here that really enjoy what they're studying. Also, reading for sure counts as a hobby! And an admirable one. I know everyone in college is super busy with schoolwork and things, and I'm sure that's true for you too (especially pre-med), so it's really impressive that you make time to read for fun. I hope you're having a good semester so far :)
ReplyDeleteHi Khadija! I have a lot of friends who are in microbio too and they want to become doctors! Med School is tough and I admire those who are willing to become doctors, it's a lot of hard work and dedication! I've seen like one episode of Games of Thrones. I wish I could enjoy it more but it doesn't appeal to me, if you like science have u seen Doctor Who? That is one of my favs; however, it's not real science at all haha just a lot of stuff about space and aliens and time travel. Thats great that you're an adventurous girl! Snowboarding is a lot of fun! I'm still a beginner but I love it! I thought about trying skydiving but I'm deadly afraid of heights so I don't know if that will work for me.. LOL. Anyways nice meeting you!
ReplyDeleteKhadija, I think that’s awesome that you are majoring with Microbiology. My brother majored with Microbiology and is in his fourth year of Medical School at OU. I definitely think you have to have a love for science to major in it because it is definitely one of the harder subjects for me! However, good luck with all of your endeavors and what you plan on doing with med school!
ReplyDeleteHey khadija, I can't seem to comment on your week 7 storytelling because you don't have a comment box. I also tried clicking comment to (atom) and it sent me to this weird text code. So i'm just going to comment your story on your introduction box because I can't figure it out.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you made your story into a poem. i haven't seen anyone do a poem yet and you're the first so that was pretty interesting! I also liked how you made the poem about the two brothers connection. I thought that was cool how you depicted Rama and Lakshmana's relationship with each other. I felt like the book didn't really talked about their relationship. However, reading your poem for some reason I thought the two brothers you were talking about were Rama and Bharata, just because he respected Rama so much that he would kill himself until Rama returns and take the throne. However, Rama and Lakshmana had a better relationship because they were always there for each other. Overall, I liked your poem was good. It was really cool that you did a poem theme.
Khadija,
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t comment on your actual Week 7 Storytelling Post so I will just make the comments on your Introduction. I really loved the idea that you did your story as a poem. I haven’t used this idea and I think that it is a great idea that is something different than what I have been seeing lately. As for the story, I really liked how sentimental it was and how the two brothers stick together no matter what. That really is what being siblings is all about being together through thick and thin. Great story I really enjoyed it!
Props to you, I cannot imagine the workload you have with all those science courses! Tests are the worst…one I hate studying and two having knowledge on a subject and being asked a very specific question is not how real life works, if that even makes any sense. (It did in my head). Have you ever been rock climbing? Its something I want to try!
ReplyDeleteHi Khadija! I hope this semester is going well for you, and that you are acing those tests! I totally understand your love for science. I couldn’t make it through pre-med and switched to English writing, but science is definitely my first love while writing is my passion. I haven’t done any of the adventures you list, but they definitely sound awesome! With spring break coming up, I hope you get to have many fun and adventurous times!
ReplyDeleteHey Khadija,
ReplyDeletereading is absolutely a hobby! It's been one of mine since I was little. My dad likes to remind that, when my older sister was learning how to read, I would cry and throw tantrums because I didn't know how yet. I have not read Martin's series, although of course I have heard fantastic things. If I were to get into any kind of long fantasy series, I'd really like to read the Lord of the Rings books first. I am ashamed to say that I used to be in love with the Harry Potter series when I was in middle school, but stopped at the 5th book and never finished the last two.
If you like fantasy, you should read some of Neil Gaiman's books (if you haven't already). He's got a ton. If you have ever heard of the movie Stardust, he wrote the book with the same name. I just finished a short novel of his called "The Ocean at the end of the Lane" and it was truly AMAZING! I highly recommend it. What are some of your favorite books?
Hey Khadija! First off, adventure is awesome! Hiking, climbing mountains, and just exploring are some things I love to do, and I really want to get out and try some "crazy" stuff sometime like skydiving. Also, I haven't read the Game of Thrones books, but I have watched the show. I definitely didn't like Littlefinger though! He's so deceptive and it makes me really frustrated! I guess that's basically any character in that show though. Everyone is always betraying someone, but to me Littlefinger seems to be almost the puppet master over so many people and it's crazy! Good luck with the rest of your semester!
ReplyDeleteHello Khadija! i love your style of writing :) I can just tell that you are very unique by the way your wrote your introduction! I think about science the same way. I love science, but all the test and lab reports makes it boring and hard. I'm not a big reader, but I've heard of game of thrones. I hope you can get into med-school soon!
ReplyDeleteHi Khadija, nice to meet you! Wow, that's a really tough major, microbiology and pre-med plus that minor. I know how difficult psych can be as I'm majoring in it and I can't imagine doing everything that you're doing, it's just amazing! I also love books and reading is my biggest and best hobby. I love horseback riding too, but am way to scared to try any of the other things, lol.
ReplyDeleteKhadija,
ReplyDeleteI am also a Game of Thrones fan, though I have not read the books. I'll take your word that the books are better though (isn't that the way it always goes?). I think it's awesome you have such a passion for science. I wish I could say the same. My major is European History...science was never my forte. Good luck with everything!
